Night 4 · Unfolding
The Bandits in the Heart
心中贼
破山中贼易,破心中贼难。
Defeating the bandits in the mountains is easy. Defeating the bandits in the heart is hard.
Wang Yangming, letter to Yang Shide and Xue Shangqian (1518), in the letters section of the Complete Works of Wang Yangming
02 Tonight
You're lying there, running the case against yourself again. You should have handled it better. Anyone else would have. Why are you always like this. The prosecution's file is well organized. The only defense lawyer is you, and you're exhausted.
03 How the ancients saw it
In 1518 Wang Yangming was not a quiet scholar in a study. He was a governor sent by the court to the mountains where Jiangxi, Fujian and Guangdong meet, a region where armed strongholds had held out for years. He led troops into the hills, and within about a year and a half the area was at peace.
In the middle of the campaign, camped at Longnan, he wrote to two of his students. The columns were all advancing on schedule, he told them, and the bandits were certain to be broken. Then he wrote: “Defeating the bandits in the mountains is easy. Defeating the bandits in the heart is hard.” Clearing out a few petty thieves was nothing remarkable, he added. Sweeping the enemies out of one's own heart would be a real achievement.
This came from a man who had fought real battles and won them. He knew exactly how hard a campaign was, and he still ranked the inner one as harder.
By “bandits in the heart” he mostly meant selfish desires and old habits that cloud one's innate good sense. That good sense, liangzhi, is his most important word, and a whole chapter of this series will be given to it later. Wang Yangming wasn't writing about sleepless nights. Still, many of us know one bandit of the heart very well: the one in a judge's robe, who hands down a sentence at 1 a.m. and allows no appeal.
Take one small thing from this tonight. If Wang Yangming called this fight hard, then a mind that won't stop putting you on trial at midnight says nothing about your character. It only means you are in the fight he called the hard one. Hard fights go slowly.
04 One line for the pillow
This is the hard fight. Being slow at it is allowed.
05 A quiet image to end on
A mountain pass in the south, long after the campaign. Grass has grown back over the old camp. A stream runs past where the tents once stood, and nobody is keeping watch.
