此心光明,亦复何言?

This mind is bright and clear. What more is there to say?

Last words as given in the Chronological Biography in the Complete Works (the Jiajing imprint reads 复何言, without 亦); Huang Wan's separate account differs. Scholars dispute whether “this mind is bright” was Wang's own (1529)

02 Tonight

The light is off, and court is in session again. You replay what you said today, the look you shouldn't have given, the reply that came half a beat late, laying them out one by one. The room is dark. Only that voice is bright, like a flashlight you refuse to put down.

03 How the ancients saw it

In 1529 Wang Yangming was gravely ill, traveling home. At Nan'an the boat stopped by the river. A student asked if he had anything left to say. According to the Chronological Biography compiled by later students, he spoke eight characters: This mind is bright and clear. What more is there to say?

Last words are easy to overfill with meaning. The Nianpu was arranged by later disciples, and the editions do not match: the Jiajing imprint lacks the character for “also,” which appears in the Complete Works text. Some scholars argue the bright-mind line may not be what he said by the river at all; Huang Wan's separate account records a different regret about unfinished learning. We still borrow the line, not because the attribution is settled, but because it fits what he taught his whole life. What he prized most was the small light of knowing right from wrong that everyone already has: liangzhi. It is not paint applied afterward. It is light that was in the mind to begin with.

Last week we read his line about bandits in the heart. The midnight judge often pretends to be the only lamp in the room: because you can see your fault, you must keep prosecuting. Wang Yangming reverses the order. That you can see the fault is itself evidence that light remains. The light is not the verdict. The light is the capacity to tell the difference.

“What more is there to say?” is worth hearing too. At that point, enough has been said. You need not add another round of self-explanation, or read the same charge more loudly. You know. The mind is bright. Tonight the file can be closed.

This does not make mistakes unimportant, and it is not an invitation to pretend nothing happened. Apologize by day when an apology is owed; change tomorrow what needs changing. Wang Yangming's unity of knowledge and action was never meant to be endless circling in the head. The unfinished midnight retrial is often neither knowledge nor action, only an echo in a dark room.

If the judge speaks again tonight, you can remember the line by the river—whoever first wrote it down. This mind is bright. That you see your own shortcoming means the light is still there. Light is enough. The rest of the speech can be shorter.

04 One line for the pillow

That you can see your fault means light is still in the mind.

05 A quiet image to end on

The river is wide. The boat is still. Only a little lamp remains. The water draws that light into a thin line, then takes it slowly back into the dark.
